Tile roofing is a popular choice for homeowners due to its durability, beauty, and longevity. As experts at diagnosing and fixing faulty roofs, we’ve seen all variations of tile roofs. Our team can spot the cause of any issue you may have with your tile roof and make repairs before the problem gets worse. However tile roofs can come in a range of sizes and styles, so there are many different terms to get your head around.
The terminology used in tile roofing can be confusing, even for experienced homeowners. So, we’ve created this tile glossary to help you understand the most common terms used in tile roofing.
Tile: A single unit of a roofing system. Tiles can be made from a variety of materials, including clay, concrete, slate, and metal.
Course: A horizontal row of tiles.
Lap: The overlap between two tiles.
Ridge: The highest point of a roof where two slopes meet.
Hip: The external angle formed by the intersection of two sloping roof surfaces.
Valley: The internal angle formed by the intersection of two sloping roof surfaces.
Eave: The edge of a roof that overhangs a wall.
Fascia: The vertical board that covers the ends of roof rafters.
Soffit: The underside of the roof overhang.
Underlayment: A waterproof material that is installed beneath the tiles to protect the roof deck from water damage.
Flashing: A metal material used to seal joints and openings in a roof.
Batten: A strip of wood that is used to support the tiles.
Mortar: A mixture of cement, sand, and water that is used to bed the tiles.
Clay Tile: A type of tile made from clay that is fired in a kiln. Clay tiles are known for their durability and aesthetic appeal.
Concrete Tile: A type of tile made from concrete that is moulded and cured. Concrete tiles are a popular choice for their affordability as a cheaper alternative to clay tiles. They’re also resistant to adverse weather conditions such as rain, hail and wind.
Slate Tile: A type of tile made from natural slate. Slate tiles are known for their longevity and beauty.
Metal Tile: A type of tile made from metal, such as copper, zinc, or aluminium. Metal tiles are a popular choice for their durability and low maintenance.
Interlocking tiles: Interlocking tiles were a revolution in roof tile technology. They combine the designs of traditional roof tiles and the advantage of quick installation.
