Flat Roofing

There have never been as many roofing options than there are today. The type of roofing system you have or would like to have depend on several different factors, including the property, Location, planning permission restrictions, budget and practicality. Even within the categories of roofing, there are different materials and techniques to achieve different effects.

Flat roofing is one of the most common forms of modern roofing systems and here at CH Roofing we fit flat roofs to buildings in Westbury, Trowbridge. Frome, Shaftesbury, and Salisbury.

With flat roofing, there are many benefits and disadvantages. With expert advice, like the kind you can expect from CH Roofing, you can decide on the best roof and material system for you and your property. There are three main types of flat roof systems you can choose from:

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) is the most common material used in flat roofing, as well as the newest. Being made from recycled rubber, EPDM is also environmentally friendly as well as its insulation properties cutting down energy costs. EPDM roofing is waterproof, inexpensive, lightweight and durable which makes it a highly desirable material. However, there are some downsides to EPDM flat roofing. Even though it’s inexpensive, opposed to its counterparts, if it is not installed correctly, it can add up with the costs of fixing and correct installation. If your room has exterior pieces, such as pipes and chimneys, extra care needs to be taken to prevent leaks and gaps.

Built-up roofing (BUR) was the most popular roofing material for flat roofing before EPDM and MBR. BUR is made from tar and gravel, which combines to create a layer which is waterproof and durable. BUR is a great choice if you plan on using the flat roof for something such as a terrace and it’s very hard-wearing and low maintenance. However, there are drawbacks to choosing BUR for your flat roof. The costs of installation can be significantly higher than other types of flat roof and also take more time to install, due to materials used. Due to its weight when complete, it is most suited to roofs with strengthened roof joists.

Modified Bitumen roofing (MBR) was a new technology introduced in the 1960s which revolutionised flat roofing. Until then, people had no choice but to have BUR which had its pros and cons. MBR had the performance of BUR but with added roof wear layers or cap sheets, which adds strength and durability. If installed incorrectly, the overlapping joints may be a source of leaking and damage. The equipment used in installing an MBR roof correctly means that it must be carried out by qualified professionals.

There are plenty of reasons why you may choose either an EPDM, BUR or MBR roof and at CH Roofing, we have the expert knowledge to help you decide on the most suitable roof for you and your property.
